Jail time for "white money" scammer
A woman arrested in Miramichi in November 2007 was sentenced to 21 months in jail in Prince Edward Island provincial court recently. Marie Claire Mballa of Paris, France, was convicted of defrauding two Charlottetown businessmen of over $50,000 in what was described as a white money scheme. Miramichi Police Force became involved in the case after receiving a tip that the 27-year-old had arrived in the city on Nov. 5, 2007. Acting on the tip and intelligence reports, Mballa was located and arrested at a local hotel. She was held in custody and turned over to police in Charlottetown. MPF members testified about her arrest and the items seized during the arrest were presented as evidence at the trial, held in March. A French provincial court judge along with a French defence lawyer and Crown prosecutor, all from New Brunswick, were brought in for the trial after Mballa requested it be held in French. At the sentence hearing, the court heard Mballa convinced the two men she was with the UN and was transporting a large amount of Canadian money disguised as white paper. The men were told she could restore the colour to the money through a special chemical process but needed to borrow cash to do it. One man gave her $29,000 and the other $24,000. Mballa was ordered to pay restitution to the men.
