Trip celebrates 100 years of Scouting

The weekend weather forecast predicted rain, rain, rain for the Miramichi area. It was not what we'd hoped for in our plans to canoe the mighty Southwest Miramichi River in May. Anyone who's canoed the Southwest Miramichi, between Boiestown and the City of Miramichi, can tell you that to travel such a distance over a three day period is a mighty tough challenge, even when the weather is at its best. To do it in a May rain, which is usually driven by a strong east wind, is another challenge in itself and enough to discourage any seasoned outdoor enthusiast.
The three-day 100 kilometre canoe trip on the Miramichi was a planned event to commemorate 100 years of Scouting in Canada (1908-2008).
For several months the 1st Gretna Green Scouts and Venturers spread the word to other Venturer companies in the province, but the only ones to step forward for the three-day challenge with 1st Gretna Green was the 1st Ritchie Lake Venturers from Quispamsis and Gondola Point Venturers from Saint John.
After a lot of careful planning the 19 members of Scouts Canada left Boiestown and 20-hours later they reached their destination. It was a grueling 20-hour paddle on swift currents and through white rapids, but they made it safely and set the standard for any future Scouting group to make the same journey, but with a time to equal, or beat.
Congratulations to the Venturers for accomplishing their "challenge".
