How would Afghanistan vote?

I am no military strategist by any stretch of the imagination so maybe I’m off base. However, this had me perplexed when the Opposition was trying to put firm deadlines on Canada pulling the plug on Afghanistan. Now that the Conservatives are talking about a 2011 withdraw, well…

Telling the Taliban when you’re leaving just doesn’t seem smart. Granted there are other countries there and this isn’t just Canada’s war but some kind of measure of success besides a date thrown out during an election campaign would seem to be a better idea.

In the Fredericton riding which is home to CFB Gagetown, it will be interesting how this plays out at the polling booths. Should we be there or not has been a debate across the country but it is worth noting that since 9/11 there have been no terrorist attacks on North American soil and life for many Afghanis has improved thanks to the Canadian Military.

War sucks but it would be a shame if all the work done by our soldiers (counting nearly 100 who gave their lives) ended up being reversed the moment we pull the plug because of an arbitrary deadline set in the heat of an election.

It matters not because soldiers follow government orders in a democracy. Personally, I am glad; Canadians have loudly said the values we claim to stand for are not good enough for the less fortunate. We are about to cut and run because we democracticly decided so. I wonder if there is any principle that Canadians who are not in the military would fight and die for?

K2000 TROOP SUPPORT has gone across Canada in support of our troops and their families. During this trip, I met many brave serving soldiers, ex military, injured soldiers and their families. One of the subjects that came up often was the lack of proper care for the families of these returning soldiers and as well proper assessment of their continual problems of PTSD.

I was made aware that there is strong evidence that a soldier that took his life in Afghanistan was not medically prepared for that tour. There has been close to 138 deaths since these troops have come home, due to PTSD. What is the government doing about it.

How many more deaths, how many more broken families. Military families are not being helped as much as the public thinks.

I challenge the Minister of Veteran Affairs to explain to Canadians exactly what is being done for these military families.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS DURING BRING UP THIS ISSUE.

In the last federal election, Jan 2006, the Afghanistan war and Canadian foreign policies were noticeably absent. Right after the election the Afghan War became suddenly become the largest foreign policy debate "s War.

Canadian public opinion was split then as it is now with costs in the billions and the costs of close to 100 Canadian soldiers.

If history repeats itself, it will not be a major election issue again and immediately after the election if Harper is again PM it will be the biggest foreign policy and more costs.

The mission there is changing when the command will be totally under the command of US Military commanders. A surge of troops will be required and Canada will be asked for more troops.

Canadians will increasing object to this when they realize that our military are not being taken care properly, injuries, deaths, repeated missions, and the harm and suffering to the military families.

The Liberals are also avoiding the war as an election issue.
