The Town Is Dry; Bars Are All Closed

Article from The Commercial, 10 May 1910

The Town has been "dry" since Thursday. It is stated that it is not possible to purchase a drop of liquor. The police committee met on Wednesday night for the purpose of considering the conditions governing the sale of liquor in the Town. It was decided that the traffic must be stopped and a motion to that effect was carried. Two of the policemen were brought before the committee and instructed that all places selling liquor were to be reported. "The unlawful selling of liquor must cease", they were told, "and if the present police force are not able to stop it, they will be discharged and new men secured who will do it."

Following this action of the committee, all of those who sell liquor immediately closed their bars and if any has been sold since, it has been to only a few people with secrecy and unknown to the police. Chief-of-Police Lawson arrived home from Eastport on Saturday, speaking to The Commercial this morning, the chief said, referring to the places where liquor is unlawfully sold. "I will close them up tight. If they are not closed, their owners will go to jail. I do not know but that I will make four or five charges before the week is out."

Rescue

Article from The Commercial, 6 August 1907

Capt. Bullick is now ready to decorate his brawny chest with medals for life-saving. On Saturday, he rescued another likely victim of a watery grave. He was running along at a smart clip when he saw a party in a gasoline boat signaling to him and pointing to an object in the water. Finally, he made out a man very low in the water and evidently exhausted, whom the motor boat had passed without tendering him any assistance. He brought his steamer around in very smart style, threw a buoy and a line to the swimmer and hauled him to safety. He proved to be a workman at the rossing mill from which point he had set out to swim across the river but played out. The captain rigged him in a set of overhauls and landed him at Bushville.

A correspondent states that the captain is to be complimented on the way he handled the steamer, picking up the man without lowering a boat. This is said to be the third rescue in six weeks.

Man attacked by shot moose

Article from The Commercial 26 September 1911

A singular adventure which might easily have had a much more serious ending, happened to William O'Keeffe of Bartibogue Road a few days ago. He was on the way along the road to his brother's home when he saw a moose in the woods close to the road. Hastening to the house he got his brother's gun and returning shot the animal. On going up to inspect his prize, which appeared to be dead, the animal jumped up and Mr. O'Keeffe was caught between the horns and made to take an involuntary ride as the animal started off with him through the woods. After travelling some distance, the moose fell and Mr. O'Keeffe was glad to be thrown clear, when the animal once again attacked him and Mr. O'Keeffe was, only with difficulty, able to get into a tree out of the way, where he had to remain until the moose, which was badly wounded, died. Mr. O'Keeffe was somewhat bruised and badly shaken up.
