The University of New Brunswick has awarded an H. Harrison McCain Bursary to five New Brunswick students for study in the 2008-09 academic year, two of them from the Miramichi area. This award, in the amount of $16,000, is payable at $4,000 per year over four years.

This year's scholarships have been awarded to Sara Ross, of Blackville, N.B., currently enrolled in the nursing program; Benjamin Taylor of Miramichi, N.B., studying in the engineering program; Nathan Merrithew of Hatfield Point, N.B., currently enrolled in the science program; Mary Jane McAfee of Saint John, N.B., currently enrolled in the nursing program; and Matthew Hachey of Saint John, N.B., currently enrolled in the arts program. Ross, Taylor and Merrithew are studying on the university's Fredericton campus while McAffee and Hachey are enrolled at the university's Saint John campus.

The H. Harrison McCain Scholarship is awarded to students who have graduated from any high school in Canada. Selection criteria include financial need, scholastic attainment, leadership qualities, and a demonstrated initiative on the part of the student in funding his/her own education. The bursaries are renewed based on the recipient maintaining an overall academic average of 2.5 in year one, 2.75 in year two and 3.0 in year three and year four years.
