After weeks of rain, the sun came out to help celebrate the 50th anniversary at Millerton School.

The planning committee, Joan Jardine, Tammy Greene, Mary Alice Ahern, Jerry Greene, Ann Kelly, Gene Kelly, Jeff Wilson, Liz Bowes, Carrie Saunders, Allie Tucker and Muriel MacCullam began planning in January to bring together graduates, students and staff who attended Millerton School during its 50 years.

Friday, Aug. 15, saw the school filled with over 250 past and present students for the Meet and Greet. There were lots of smiles, "remember when's," and hugs. Two of the teachers, Mrs. Winnifred Jardine and Mrs. Pearl Bryenton from Millerton Consolidated High School, which opened in January 1958, were on hand to cut the anniversary cake.

On Saturday morning, the Renous Rec Centre hosted a breakfast that served over 200 meals. It was another time to sit and chat with local people and those who had travelled from other provinces.

Over 35 past and present staff members gathered at the school, for a tea prepared by the Derby United Church Women. Four recent principals were in attendance — Paul Tozer, Pat Clancy, Gordon Ross and Muriel MacCullam.

During the afternoon, about 150 took part in the Home and School barbecue, which also included a jumping castle and tours of the building. There were displays of pictures, year books, memorabilia and a slide presentation.

The day ended with a dance at the Tom Donovan Arena in Renous with over 250 people, and music provided by Gordie Munro, aka Gordioke. Prizes were provided by Molson's, Carla's Hair Design and the organizing committee.

Sunday saw a Car Show and Shine hosted by the Miramichi River Cruisers, and a barbecue put on by the Pathfinder Europe Trip 2010 group. The girls also organized games and face painting.

1958 saw the first graduating class of the school. It was made up of five students: Myles Silliker, Cecelia Sauntry, Willa Parks, Stella Gerrish and Evelyn Kelly. All five were able to be at the 50th Anniversary celebration, along with their spouses and families.

The organizing committee wants to thank the community for the wonderful support shown for this weekend.
