Tuna fishery to begin this weekend
Published Friday September 5th, 2008

It seems with the beginning of the new school year, fall arrives instantly. The anticipation of the first day is over, new friends have been made and everyone is starting to settle back into their routines again. Vacationers have returned to their homes and the gardens are ready to be harvested.
Fall is one of my favourite seasons, with the cool mornings and evenings and the sunny afternoons.
This past weekend I was in Halifax at the Country Rocks 2008 concert. The showcase of performers was fantastic — Jimmy Rankin, Great Big Sea, Charlie Major, Mark Cameron, Johnny Reid, Aaron Pritchett, Gretchen Wilson and the showstopper — Keith Urban. It was a smaller crowd than the Country Rocks the Hill shows in Moncton — I was told that only 25,000 tickets were sold for this show — I'm not sure how accurate that figure was but the Halifax Commons was jam packed for the show. Hats off to Halifax for a great show!
Fishing News
The captain and crew of the Sea Princess No. 1 hope to be heading to Eastern Passage this weekend to begin the 2008 tuna fishery. The fishing plan was agreed upon last week and now each crew will decide when it is the best time to head out on the waters to catch the elusive blue fin.
The fall herring fishery is still underway. Lobster catches are moderate to fair with only one month left of the season.

Celebrating Miramichi Rural School
2009 marks the 70th anniversary of Miramichi Rural High School in Bay du Vin. MRHS was the first rural high school in New Brunswick. In June of this year, the present Miramichi Rural School celebrated the launch of the Miramichi Rural Heritage Project. During this evening of celebration there was interest from those in attendance to hold a larger celebration in 2009. If anyone is interested in forming a committee to celebrate this milestone, please contact me at 228-4988 or by e-mail at greganl@hotmail.com
