International speaker Kevin Baskerville from England will be presenting an autism conference in Miramichi on Thursday, April 3 on "Adapting the Learning Environment for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder through Education, Home and Community".

The day long conference begins at 9 a.m. at Centre Communautaire Beausoleil.

From an education and home perspective it is essential to lay solid foundations from which learning can develop. This workshop will help parents and professionals recognise what ingredients are required to lay this foundation; what pieces of the puzzle are needed to allow all individuals, of all ages, of all functional ability, to progress to the best of their ability – without placing too much expectations on their shoulders, but placing this need for adaptation and change onto the shoulders of the community.

This workshop will establish theories to learning, suggestions and strategies to improve educational and community accessibility to learning. It will help to challenge situations where the expectations for change are placed on the individual's shoulders. It will draw from an array of strategies and approaches, to include introducing a concept to baseline social ability and to plan towards establishing a programme that could shape social improvement for individuals and the community they live within.

These sessions will be suitable for professionals, family members and individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Asperger's Syndrome.

Baskerville is currently the Autism Intensive support Teacher with the Leicestershire Autism Outreach Team, in central England. He is establishing a team of professionals whose role will be to work with the students who find accessing school/community so severely challenging.

Baskerville started out as a teacher working within the ASD field in Australia, UK and Kuwait but then worked as a consultant with the Geneva Centre for Autism, Toronto working across Canada. He still presents many different workshops and courses across Canada, the UK and other parts of the world.

Baskerville is particularly interested in social skill development of individuals with ASD but also in establishing community links to make adjustments, therefore hopefully reducing the demands on our children and families.
