Daughter of former Miramichi man winning honors as pianist.

The many Miramichi friends of Hugh Sheasgreen of Saskatoon, Sask., a former resident of South Esk and a cousin of Mrs. William A. Craig and William Copp of Newcastle will be interested in the following taken from “Western Canada Radio News,” in regard to his daughter, Miss Alma Sheasgreen. Mrs. Sheasgreen was formerly Miss Gertude Elhatton of Bathurst. “CKMO has engaged this gifted young pianist as staff artist.

Miss Sheasgreen is heard on Wednesday and Friday evening at 8 o’clock in programs of classical music. Born in historic Concerd, Massachusetts, Miss Sheasgreen moved with her parents to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and at an early age display definite talent for the piano. Her first honors included medals won in the Saskatoon musical festival and her playing secured praise from such musicians as Dr. Staton and Dr. Thomas Dunhill.

Venturing to Chicago, the mecca for young musicians, she won for herself a scholarship that gave her the conveted lessons with that great artist of the piano, Percy Grainger. Later in New York she studied under Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hughes. Miss Sheasgreen’s playing is distinguished not only by her brilliant technique, but by the depth of her interpretative power.

Eastern critics have been generous in their praise, and at one of her recitals, played before New York’s “Three Arts Club,” she scored a personal triumph.

Her radio debut was made in Saskatchewan, and she played on Canadian Radio Commission network programs until coming to Vancouver last fall. Her introduction in this city was over CKWA on Hudson’s Bay Company presentations with Eleanor Agnew, violinist.

Judging from her successes and understanding of her art, Alma Sheasgreen should have a brilliant career.” (Page 1, March 29, 1935, The North Shore Leader).
