Capt. Charles Duffy home from overseas
Capt. (Dr.) J. Charles Duffy returned to his home in Chatham early Saturday morning after spending the past two years and nine months overseas and is receiving a warm welcome from many friends.
He arrived at Halifax on Friday and after remaining for the weekend with his mother, Mrs. Anna B. Duffy, Water Street, reported to Headquarters at M.D. No. 7, Saint John, for further instructions.
Capt. Duffy enlisted June 25th. 1940 and was attached to the North Shore (NB) Regiment going overseas with that unit in June, 1941. For the past thirteen months he has been with the 14th Field Ambulance, R.C.A.M.C. in England.
Last year Capt. Duffy was mentioned in news despatches for his courage and devotion to duty during a raid on a coastal town.
While attending the casualties, he remained in the basement of a demolished house to amputate an injured man’s leg, which amputation was necessary to rescue him and other occupants.
At the time the town was still being bombed heavily. (Page 1, March 31, 1944, The North Shore Leader).
