Miramichi's potential needs to be promoted, says council candidate Michael (Tanker) Malley.
Malley, 45, is a former councillor and deputy mayor and also served as an MLA.
Malley said Miramichi is a great place to live and needs to be promoted.
"We have more potential than any other city in the province."
If elected, his focus will be on job creation, Malley said — and added he will be vocal about it.
"There's a time to rock the boat."
Malley said he has always been vocal about what he believes in.
"I'm not just a ‘Yes' man."
Improved post-secondary education through a polytechnic school would be good for the city because students wouldn't have to leave to get an education, he said.
"I think it would be cheaper in the long run."
Malley said Moncton and Fredericton have universities for their students and so should Miramichi.
"We don't have to play second fiddle to them."
The provincial government promised money for education, he said.
"We can't let that just die."
Malley said the city also needs to attract long-term foreign investment.
"Not just the short haul."
