Miramichi Flying School was taken over Thursday
Large annual payroll, employees 100 and 35 student every 24 days.
A dominion charter of incorporation has been granted to the Miramichi Flying Training School Ltd. which on Thursday, May 15th, took over No. 21 Elementary Flying Training School at Chatham, N.B. in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Sponsored by a group of Moncton men, the company is taking over a million dollar project whose payroll will amount to many thousand of dollars annually. Employees of the school will number about 100 and 35 students will be turned out every 25 days.
Staffed largely by Moncton men in the major tests, the school will take its first class on July 15, but between now and then will be a beehive of activity as preparations are made. Buildings are now completed, but equipment is to be installed, planes are to be tested and the personnel of engineering staff, flying instructors and office staff will be trained in two months before the school takes its initial class.
Company Officers The company whose president is William V. Creaghan, vice president Dr. G.R. Baxter, secretary-treasurer Roger Mills and managing director J.W. Humphrey, all of Moncton, has operated the Moncton Flying Training School on the old Moncton airport. The present class of 13 students will finish their course about June 15 and from then on the staff will be operating from the new field in Chatham.
Mr. Humphrey, a veteran of the last war, will manage the school and will be assisted by Roger Mills, as secretary-treasurer; William H. Randall as quartermaster; Clyde Fitch, Moncton, as Chief ground instructor; Arthur Snowden as chief flying instructor; Wiley Weeks, assistant chief flying instructor, all of Moncton, as well as other personnel of the Moncton Flying Club.
The school is one of 26 in Canada and represents an investment of approximately a million dollars. It is operated entirely by the company.
To become managing director J.W. Humphrey is resigning as manager and vice president of Humphrey Motors Ltd.
Veteran of Last War John W. Humphrey, long association with the automobile business in Moncton,has announced his resignation as manager and vice-president of Humphrey Motor to take the position of managing director of the Miramichi Flying School under the Commonwealth Air Training Plan.
Mr. Humphrey, by taking over the Air Force position, goes into uniform for the second time. A veteran of the last war, he served in France with distinction. After the war he became associated with his father, W.A. Humphrey, president of Humphrey Motors and founder of the firm and remained with the company ever since.
The younger Mr. Humphrey joined the army with the 64th Battalion in 1915 in Sussex, and went to France with the third Canadian Division in 1916. There he remained until the Armistice and returned home in May, 1919.
Interested in civic affairs, he was alderman-at-large on the city council in 1925 and he has been active in business organizations and service clubs.
He has been associated with flying since the inception of the Moncton Flying Club in 1929.
He has been president of the club and at present holds that post. Mr. Humphrey is also past president of the Moncton Auto Dealers Association. His family will remain in Moncton when he goes to Chatham. (Page 1, May 16, 1941, The North Shore Leader).
