When four girls in Colleen Tozer's Grade 4 class at Nelson Rural School heard about the Miramichi SPCA being unable to open several days a week due to insufficient funding, they decided to do something. They had a meeting with their teacher and classmates and arranged a bake sale, a popsicle sale and a used book sale. The class also collected their leftover lunch money and brought in old blankets to help the needy animals at the shelter. The four girls spent many recesses indoors counting and rolling change. For all their hard work, in total, $467.85 was raised.

A classroom visit was arranged with Sharon Barrieau from the SPCA, who brought with her two kittens and one puppy from the shelter. The children were very excited to hold the kittens and the puppy, and they had many questions for Barrieau after her presentation.
