Harkins students, staff have fun day in celebration of fundraising milestone

Teachers and staff at Harkins Elementary School were toilet papered, silly stringed, taped to their chairs, and "pied" by some lucky students Oct. 3.
At an assembly held Friday afternoon, kids got some time away from their studies to have a party in celebration of raising more than $3000 for the Terry Fox Run.
Their total count was $3046.05 — the most the school has ever raised.
"That's pretty amazing when you think our student population is actually declining," said principal Mary Ann Barrieau.
Anyone who helped raise pledges had their name put in a special ballot. Raising any money got students a chance to toilet paper a staff member. For $25 they got a chance to silly string an adult and for $50 they got a ballot for a chance to tape a teacher to a chair.
Grade 1 student Molly Hutchison raised over $100 for the charity.
"My grandmother gave me money and my other grandmother gave me money. And my aunt gave me money. And I took some out of my piggy bank."
She said she really wanted to raise the hundred dollars in hopes of getting to hit one of her teachers in the face with a pie. She and two other students got that top prize. Students cheered as their favourite teachers got a mouth and eye full of whipped cream.
Barrieu said in the past the school has gone to local businesses asking for prizes to give out to the hard working students, but this year they decided to have some fun.
"Kids have been telling me this was the best day ever," she said.
And every staff member agreed to participate.
"I told them they better come dressed prepared for anything," Barrieau laughed.
And the teachers got involved in other ways, too. As a reward for hitting their halfway point of $1500, gym teacher Ryan Flynn and music teacher Krista Hutchison agreed to switch classes for the day.
"I did some square dancing with the kids," said Hutchison. "I actually had to go and buy sneakers. And Mr. Flynn is not exactly musically talented."
Besides being gym teacher for the day Hutchison agreed to kiss an unknown "creature" if the students met their final goal. The "creature" turned out to be a large fish.
