The Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation (ASCF) presented $25,000 to the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) yesterday at ASF headquarters near St. Andrews to further research that tracks migrating juvenile salmon on their way to ocean feeding grounds.
From their birth rivers in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, using the latest technology, ASF tracks salmon smolts through estuaries into the ocean to determine when and where mortality occurs. Results will help in developing appropriate remediation plans. ASF and partners pioneered and have been refining this technology since the early 1990s.
ASCF is a volunteer, non-profit, charitable organization that promotes healthy and sustainable wild Atlantic salmon stocks in Atlantic Canada and Québec through community partnerships. The Foundation was created in 2007, with a $30 million endowment from the government of Canada. The interest from the fund is used to finance projects that contribute to salmon restoration and conservation.
The Atlantic Salmon Federation is an international, non-profit organization that promotes the conservation and wise management of wild Atlantic salmon and their environment. ASF has a network of seven regional councils (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Maine and Western New England). The regional councils cover the freshwater range of the Atlantic salmon in Canada and the United States.
