Council candidate Joan Mador wants Miramichi to make the most of what it has and improve the lives of people here.
Born in Chatham in 1949, Mador is married with two children and four grandchildren. She was the president of CUPE local 872 for 15 years and was an instructor in workplace quality assurance. She is also active in the community and was co-founder and past-president of the Miramichi Physically Handicapped and Disabled Association.
Mador says she wants the city to be more careful with its spending and only approve solutions that will ensure sustainability and healthy development.
"Your tax dollars are precious and should be treated as such," she said.
Mador wants councils to focus on ways to improve the city by supporting low-income families, supporting community efforts such as the food bank, encouraging business development and expansion, improving medical services and helping the unemployed.
"Council should encourage the wonderful spirit of volunteerism and generosity on the river," she said.
Health is also an important issue for Mador, as is recreation. She wants a healthy viable environment and believes the community must protect the air, watercourse, potable water, wild life and the natural beauty of the area.
"Recreational opportunities must be affordable, accessible and bountiful," she said.
