Steamer launched Tuesday morning

A8

The “Max Aitken” will run on the Newcastle-Redbank route in place of the “Dorothy N.”

The steamer that the Newcastle Steamboat Co., has had under construction at the old ferry slip during the winter was launched on Tuesday morning at 10:30. About two hundred people were present to witness the event. Miss Margaret McCurdy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Mc- Curdy, christened the new boat “Max Aitken.”

This steamer is the first one build here in many years. It will run on the Newcastle-Redbank route, in place of the Dorothy “N” which has been disposed off to Campbellton parties.

Captain Spurgeon Amos, of Lower Derby, will have charge of the boat.

The company started work on the Sir Max last July. Mr. George Henderson prepared the plans and superintended the building of the boat.

It has an 82 ft. keel with a 16 ft. beam and is 86 ft. over all on deck, making it 22 ft. longer and 5 ft. wider than the Dorothy N; it contains twin screws and has a draft of four feet.

It is fitted out with more spacious cabins than the Dorothy N and will carry considerable more freight.

It is expected that the new boat will be inspected immediately and will be ready for her first trip the later part of next week. (Page 1, May 17, 1918, The North Shore Leader).
