Athletic awards to St. Thomas College students
St. Thomas College’s outstanding athlete of the year was named and received the accompanying award at the annual athletic banquet held Sunday evening. He is Wally Jimmo, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Jimmo of Chatham, who was goaltender for St. Thomas Tommies of the North Shore Hockey League during the 1958-1959 season. George Harris presented Jimmo the Duplessie- O’Reilly Trophy.
The outstanding event of the year was termed St. Thomas Tommies 8-1 win over Mount Allison University Mounties of Sackville in winning the New Brunswick-Prince Edward Island Intercollegiate Hockey League championship.
Captain Bob Reid of the Tommies was presented the Alden Daley Trophy. Awards went to: Most valuable football player of the year, Brian Jones, Timiskaming, Que.; William Waller Trophy, Brian Jones; most improved football player of the year, Ron Shannon, Saint John; three years in varsity sports, Maurice Doulay, David Daigle, Tom Daley, Terrence Gulliver, Gerald Hickey, Wally Jimmo, Mike Regan, Gerald Preston; “T”s, Tom Daley, Gerald Hickey, Wally Jimmo, Brian Jones, Don Mahoney, Hugh Wood, Larry Doucet; Crests for service rendered to college athletics during the year, Bill Waller, Stuart Butler, Jack Stevens, Joseph Cook, David McWilliam.
Among managers and captains appointed for the football and hockey teams for the coming season were: football captain, Paul Morrissy.
Brian Jones was toastmaster at the banquet and guest speaker was Rev. G.J. Harrington. Leonard Doucette proposed the toast to the Queen and a prayer for the Pope was by Rev. T.J. McKendy. (Page 1, May 8, 1959, The North Shore Leader).
