A5

On July 20 during the Rendez Vous Neguac 2008 blessing of the fleet, the Village of Neguac commemorated the 250th anniversary of the burning of the village of Esgenoôpetitj in 1758. The blessing of the fleet was to have been followed by fireworks, but a sudden storm led to their being postponed to this Sunday, July 27 at 8 p.m. at the Neguac Wharf.

The following is the citation that Mayor Roger Ward Jr. read:

"It is with great pleasure that I declare as mayor that Neguac within the Rendez-Vous Festival offers praise to the Mi'kmaq people for their courageous acts of friendship and of protection of the Acadian people of Neguac in commemoration of the 250th anniversary since Sept. 16, 1758, of the burning of the village of Esgenoopetitj, now known as Burnt Church. Tonight, the Village of Neguac and the province of New Brunswick offers a fireworks presentation to honour the Acadian-Mi'kmaq eternal friendship. Also, Neguac will fly the Mi'kmaq state flag at it's municipal and community flag sites on the 250th anniversary this Sept. 16, 2008."

Rendez Vous Neguac 2008 continues until Sunday, when there will be a parade at 2 p.m., starting in Lower Neguac near the village office and proceeding to CSC La Fontaine.
