The annual Condor Christmas Classic tournament started with a game between longtime local rivals Sugarloaf Senior High School of Campbellton and the host Dalhousie Condors on Dec. 14, won by the Condors.

The Condors moved to 2-0 after a Friday afternoon thumping of Rothesay Netherwood to finish first in their pool while Sugarloaf moved to 1-1 after beating Rothesay later in the day Friday to qualify for the Saturday morning semifinals.

Dalhousie lost to Miramichi Valley High School 61-57 in their semi while Sugarloaf was unable to maintain its lead after three quarters in losing its semifinal 84-73 to John Caldwell of Grand Falls.

The afternoon final was back and forth and went to overtime with Miramichi dropping a three-pointer at the buzzer to claim the banner by a score of 89-86.

Bathurst High won the consolation game with a 77-57 win over Rothesay.

Prior to the Dalhousie game Friday afternoon, a ceremony was held marking 50 years of basketball at the school, with some members of the first-ever team on hand for the event.
