Letter to the editor | Turn out to vote, keep open mind

In my opinion, if the plans for converting the old court house into a cultural centre do not include the upgrading of all roads leading to the centre, the project is doomed to fail. Even if the plans mentioned in your newspaper do include upgrading the roads, I am not convinced this is not another fool's folly.

The newly elected mayor and council best be careful with this one.

In the newspaper you have included comments from candidates for mayor and council. I read these comments carefully and tried to absorb what was being said. The words "economical development" appears many, many times in the comments, but there was never mention of anything specific. Economical development covers a wide range.

Those presently sitting on council who are seeking re-election would like us to believe they have seen the errors of their ways, and are ready to repent. Miramichi City doesn't need a council of flip-floppers who would bend to the whims of others.

This election is for a council at large, I find it difficult to convince myself that those elected will not treat the area in which they reside as a priority over the rest of the city.

After reviewing the comments of the candidates for council and trying to read between the lines, I could come up with only five candidate who would be an asset on council. There are many on an ego trip; some seek notoriety; there are those who should never have offered in the first place; then there are those, who are attempting to repent for past performances.

Phew! We've got problems in the city — and I don't mean any other city but Miramichi City.

I offer my opinion, in the context of the way I see it, and at the same time hoping the people who cast their votes — hoping, too, that there is a record turnout — will keep an open mind when marking their Xs. If my opinion is proven to be off base because the people decided it was, I am quite prepared to eat crow. The results on May 12 will be the deciding factor.
