Congratulations to letter writer

I would like congratulate Dawn Whitney for her letter about the Canadian flag. I wish I had done it after I noticed the six flags at the exhibition building during the last polling day for city council election, but as the new kid on the block and living at Retirement Miramichi, I let it slide — though that is no excuse for not doing some thing about, like writing a letter to the editor.

I did ask two gentlemen about the flags who at the time seemed to have some connection with the city, because they were standing at the door way and had some kind of badge/ID on their jackets. I asked both who was responsible for the flags, which were in tatters. I said they were a disgrace. I could see I had struck a nerve. Their response was that the winter weather was responsible and because it costs $125-$175 to change each flag, they are changed only once a year, on June 1.

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but two things flashed through my mind: one, the cost of these six flags — now I read there are more — is well over $1,000 and, two, why not fix the poles once and for all so the replacements would not be necessary every year.

Again congratulations to Dawn Whitney for doing the right thing.
