“We are pleased to provide funding to support upgrades to this historic theatre that will make their programming available and accessible to everyone,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace, in a media release Friday on behalf of Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The media release said that funding will include $70,000 from the provincial government, $170,000 from Canadian Heritage through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, and $88,343 from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The funding will assist in maintaining the theatre’s programming, including the annual multidisciplinary performing arts series. It will also assist in making improvements, including new front doors, a theatre stage cloth, renovated washrooms, and the purchase of a small boom lift, said the media release.

“The Imperial Theatre has a rich history and is a cultural landmark in beautiful Saint John,” said Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long in the media release. “I am thrilled that the Government of Canada is investing in the programming and restoration of this facility as it continues to provide this region with outstanding artistic performances.”

Long was there on behalf of Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge and federal Rural Economic Development Minister Gudie Hutchings, who is the minister responsible for ACOA.

Angela Campbell, the theatre’s executive director, said in the release that she is proud of the theatre’s community spirit and its meaningful reach to connect and engage people through performing arts.

“This funding expands opportunities to reach audiences through innovative programming and outreach. The capital improvements which will replace the existing wooden front doors, along with upgrades to the washrooms, ensure universal accessibility for people from all walks of life,” she said in the release.
