Government fails athletes

Letter to the editor

I am somewhat perturbed at all levels of government, as this opinion letter will indicate.
To no fault of their own I was disappointed in the performance of our Canadian athletes at the summer Olympics held in China. If you took notice, those who won medals were from countries who don't experience harsh winters as we do, or from countries who support their athletes. Although our athletes try to do Canada proud, the support Canada affords their athletes sucks.
In my opinion, all levels of governments like to boast of their surpluses, if any, but none contribute to facilities or qualified training for our athletes who enjoy competing in summer athletics. It appears to me that it is not asking too much for each province and territory to have facilities to accommodate our summer athletes.
I paid particular attention to the coaching staff representing our athletes when they shook their heads or bowed their heads in disappointment. Maybe, just maybe its not the learnee but, the fault of the trainee.
Athletes representing Canada gave it their best shot. It appears to me that Canada should give their athletes their best shot.
Why? Can't the government approach the major oil companies operating in Canada, and ask for their financial support for the facilities and training expertise for our athletes who wish not only to compete for themselves but, for Canada as well. It's not that the oil companies aren't making a profit and they can turn loose some of their profits without hurting themselves and contribute to the good of all. After all, isn't it our monies that incurred these outlandish profits for the oil companies? There are plenty of ways profits and surpluses can be used besides high salaries and bonuses. Canadian athletics would be a good start, in my opinion.
