HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY — The Bernice MacNaughton Highlanders powered their way across the try line in the last minute Wednesday to hand the James M Hill Tommies a heartbreaking 10-5 defeat in their home opener. The loss moves the Tommies to 1-2 in New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association AAA boys rugby action.

HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY — The Miramichi Valley Pulamoo girls rugby team earned its first victory of the season Tuesday in grand style with 34-0 drumming of the Louis J. Robichaud Cavalier.

Fire Hawks win fifth title
GENTLEMEN HOCKEY — The Casey Tire Fire Hawks defeated True Tronic 5-3 recently to capture their fifth Newcastle Workmen’s League hockey title.
Schools to have more Phys. Ed.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION—Beginning next year, anglophone elementary school students in the province will receive more instructional time in physical education. Right now students are allocated 100 minutes per week for Phys. Ed., with most schools averaging 91 minutes.

Newcastle Legion set to celebrate anniversary
The Royal Canadian Legion, Miramichi Branch No. 10 will celebrate its 80th Anniversary on Sunday, June 8. Plans have been made to mark the occasion. On that day at 2p.m. a parade will form up in front of the TD Bank on Pleasant Street and march to the cenotaph in Queen Elizabeth Square.
Car wash set to raise funds for injured correction officers
Staff from the Atlantic Institution in Renous will be holding a car wash at the Top Gun Car Wash in Douglastown on Saturday May 10 as the next event in the Vernon/Barry fund raising drive. The campaign began last fall after two correctional officers Vernon Brideau and Barry Amos were paralyzed in separate accidents just a month apart. The main goal is to raise $150,000 to provide the two men with handicapped accessible vehicles.

JUNIOR A HOCKEY — The Maritime Junior A Hockey League could be without at least two of its teams next season. According to the Charlottetown Abbies website, the team has applied for a one-year leave of absence from the league to deal with financial issues.

BOWLING — The big news is the huge magic 400 tossed out by Jo Anne Gallant (437), who bowls in the Monday Ladies League. She had strings of 135, 137 and a monstrous 165. Congratulations to a super knight!
JMH boys pick up first ruby win
HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY — The James M. Hill Tommies AAA boys rugby team picked up their first win of the regular season Saturday, downing the Clement Cormier Cavaliers 20-7. The win moves the team to 1-1 on the season.

Janelle Graham of the Northeast Moose Atom Development team rushes into the offensive zone on a scoring chance during action Saturday at the Lord Beaverbook Arena. This past weekend the teams in the East Coast Ice Spring Hockey League were in Miramichi for a slate of games.
Bantam AA Champs
The Miramichi Rivermen Bantam AA recently won the District 8 Competitive League Championship in Rogersville with an exciting overtime win over the home team. The Rivermen had a great season, losing only one league game througout the year.
