HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY — As if the game of rugby wasn't rough enough, it's time to throw a little cross-river rivalry and city bragging rights into the mix.

The James M Hill Tommies and the Miramichi Valley Pulamoo AAA girls teams will meeting this Friday afternoon at 5 p.m on the MVHS rugby pitch for their only regular season fixture this year.

Both sides began play at Rugbyfest 2008 hosted at Rothesay Netherwood School. The Tommies dropped their first game of the tournament 10-0 to Hampton High School, followed with a scoreless draw against North Hastings High School and then lost 10-3 to St. Peter Catholic High School.

The Pulamoo started the tournament with a 14-0 loss to Fundy High School, then lost 22-0 to Riverview High School and 15-0 to St. Stephen High School.

Despite struggling at the tournament, the Tommies rallied and started their season April 29 with a bang. On their home pitch the host Tommies pounded the Louis J. Robichaud Patriotes 65-0. Kaitlin McGraw led the way for her side with five tries and five conversions in the game. The Tommies also got three tries from Jodi Hachey and one try each from Megan Murdoch, Karley McKenzie and Jessica Beaulieu. The game against MVHS will be their second fixture of the season.

The Pulamoo also opened their season April 29, but on the road in Bouctouche, taking on the Ecole Clement-Cormier Cavalieres. Sophie Manuel would score two tries for MVHS and Tarryn Landry would add a conversion, but it wasn't enough, as the Pulamoo would lose the match 27-12.

Then, on May 2, the Pulamoo were scheduled to hold their home opener, but a delay preparing their pitch forced them onto a neutral site at JMH. On a miserably cold and rainy afternoon, the Pulamoo would find themselves on the wrong end of a 34-0 loss to the Harrison Trimble High School Trojans.

The Pulamoo were scheduled to play the Patriotes in Shediac Tuesday afternoon. Results of that game will be in the Friday Miramichi Leader.

The girls' derby is the last regular season fixture for MVHS. JMH then plays twice more, travelling to Moncton to take on the Trojans May 13, and then hosting the Cavalieres May 16.

The boys derby will be held, May 24, at the MVHS pitch.
