Vics earn split with Eagles

FAST PITCH SOFTBALL — the Miramichi Vics and Eel Ground Eagles split a double header Wednesday night in Miramichi Tim Horton's Men's Fast Pitch Softball doubleheader action.
In Game 1 the Vics were not able to hang on to the lead they established in the early innings. A six run fifth for the Eagles allowed them to steal Game 1 by a score of 9-6. Rodney Simonson earned the win on the mound, going six innings, giving up the six runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five. Brandon Gorman took the loss for the Vics, giving up nine runs on five hits and seven walks while striking out six.
The Eagles received some timely hitting, taking advantage of walks given up by the Vics. Scott Saunders batted two singles, Rod Simonson had a double while the rest of the Eagles chipped in with three singles and all reached base once. The Vics were led by Billy Ahern with a home run and a single. Phil Bremner and Riley Harris had triples, Brandon Gorman a double and Ashley Cosgrove added a single.
In Game 2 the roles were reversed as it was the Eagles who were unable to keep the lead. The Vics put up five runs in the top of the sixth to grab the lead and held on for the 10-6 victory. Ashley Cosgrove earned the win going six strong, giving up six runs on six hits and no walks while striking out three. Rod Simonson was on the mound once again for the Eagles, this time suffering the loss, going six innings giving up ten runs on nine hits and five walks while striking out four.
The Vics spread the offense around in the win. Billy Ahern and Blake Lynch batted doubles while Riley Harris and Ashley Cosgrove had two singles. Brandon Gorman, Brett Goodin and Jenna Saunders contributed adding singles in the late inning comeback. Mike Simonson had a home run and a single for the Eagles, Blair Augustine had a triple and single, Rod Simonson batted a double and Frank Patles added a single.
After Wednesday's doubleheader the Eagles remain at .500 with a 3-3 record on the year while the Vics improved to 2-8. The Eagles don't see action until Tuesday in Loggieville against the N.B. Midget squad, while the Vics will be in action this weekend in Bass River as they travel for the N.B. Junior Provincials.
