'Prince' and 'Amazon' come first in tournament
Published Monday October 13th, 2008

BOWLING — The editor has decreed that my column could and should be published twice a week. It's a little more work, but I agree entirely. So, in the Monday edition I'll concentrate on all leagues except the Men's League. It will also include various tournaments, especially the Three-Six-Nine. With this arrangement, I should be able to include at least one photo per column. As requested, I will try to include more action shots without getting hit by a cannon ball or bothering the warring knights. The Wednesday paper will include only comments on the Men's League, within reason. I trust this arrangements will be agreeable to both the knights (bowlers) and the public at large.
On Sunday, Oct. 5, the Ron Morrison Memorial Doubles Tournament was held, with 14 squads taking part. "Princess" Phyllis Young gave a very appropriate eulogy, from the one she wrote for my column on Dec. 24, 2007. Ronnie will always remain in the hearts and mind of his family as well as the many knights who knew him so well.
The pair of "Prince" Paul Gallant (average of 122.5) and "Amazon" Wanda Hachey (106.6) came first, followed by "Money Man" Sonny Richard (116.5) and "Lady" Ann Gulliver (110.3). Coming in third place was the pair of Capt. John (112.5) and Ron Aube (106.8).
In the sixth battle Capt John (112) had a chance for first but was sunk by "Prince" Paul (142). At the same time "Amazon" Wanda (120) sent Leo "The Lion" Furlong (95) crawling back to his lair. Meanwhile, the then-first-place "Money Man" and "Lady" Ann lost more ground, to finally lose out for first place. It was quite a last-minute battle.
The best hugger was "Lady" Kaye Cusson (98.5) who gave a triple hug to a certain knight for her strike, and two double hugs to Ron Aube for his two strikes. So, "Princess" Phyllis take note, but thanks for organizing this fun event.
Here are some of the highlights in various leagues:
Oct. 2 Thursday Leagues:
Both "Lady" Sharon Aube (232D) and "Prince" Paul Gallant (273D) rode sturdy steeds. In the earlier Mixed League "Lady" Ann Guiliver (373; 421 handicap) and "Hopeful" Gilles Cusson (385; 433 h'cap) were hot-to-trot on well-armed war horses. "Champ" Brad MacDonald finally joined the magic 400 club with his 404 triple. Congratulations!
Oct. 3 Friday Leagues
In the afternoon Seniors League Marvel Kernighan (343; 122) and "Money Man" Sonny Richard (368; 136) were unbeatable. During the evening battles in the Mixed League "Queen" Gloria Matchett (217D) and "Prince" Paul Gallant (405; 127, 136, 142) rode the best war horses. Congratulations to "Prince" Paul for his second magic 400 of the year.
Oct. 5 Sunday Mixed League
Trina Williston (241D) and "Mighty" Mike Burns (228D) fought pretty good battles.
Oct. 6 Monday Ladies League
Riding the best horses were Sheilah Robinson (135 S) and Eileen Girouard (336). I finally met Sheilah (107.8 ave.) in battle at the Ron Morrison Memorial Tournament. She travels all the way from Doaktown, twice a week. What a knight! This is the same lady knight who captained the Robinson Rollers and won both the season play and roll-offs last year. What a knight!
Oct. 7 Tuesday Carrefour Mixed
"High Flyer" Nikki Murdock (119 S), "Princess" Phyllis Young (318) and "Commander" Claude Ferron (366) were tough to beat in battle.
Oct. 8 Wednesday Seniors
Sandra Goodfellow (306; 118) and Alton Allison (326; 120) scored well.
Don't forget the North Shore Senior Men's Tournament at the Castle Oct. 17,18 and 19. We have two local teams fighting it out. Once more, congratulations to both "Prince" Paul (405) and "Champ" Brad MacDonald (404) for cracking the 400 triple barrier. Until next week, keep on rolling and stay clear of Night Mares ... eh "Lady" Ann?
